             Circus maximums
  • The Circus Maximus was a chariot racetrack in Rome first constructed in the 6th century BCE. The Circus was also used for other public events such as the Roman Games and gladiator fights and was last used for chariot races in the 6th century .
  • The Circus Maximus, located in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills, is the oldest and largest public space in Rome and legend says that the Circus was originally laid out in the 6th century CE by the first Roman kings
  • At its largest during the 1st century CE following its rebuilding after the fire of 64 CE, the Circus had a capacity for 250,000 spectators seated on banks 30 m wide and 28 m high. Seats were in concrete and stone in the lower two tiers and wood for the rest.
  • The track, originally covered in sand, measured 540 x 80 m and had 12 starting gates fort the chariots.
Coliseum
  • The arena was used to host spectacular public entertainment events such as gladiator fights, wild animal hunts and public executions from 80 CE to 404 CE.
  • The theatre was spectacular even from the outside with monumental open arcades on each of the first three floors presenting statue-filled arches. The first floor carried Doric columns, the second Ionic and the third level Corinthian. The top floor had Corinthian pilasters and small rectangular windows. There were no less than eighty entrances, seventy-six of these were numbered and tickets were sold for each.
  • Coliseum was approximately 45,000 seated and 5,000 standing spectators. One of the oldest depictions of the Coliseum appeared on the coins of Titus and shows three tiers, statues in the upper external arches and the large column fountain - the Meta Sudans - which stood nearby.
  • Titus and Claudius were noted for shouting at the gladiators and other members of the crowd

Aqueducts
  •  In antiquity, aqueducts were a means to transport water from one place to another, achieving a regular and controlled water supply to a place which would not otherwise have received sufficient water to meet basic needs such as irrigation of food crops and drinking fountains.
  • The earliest and simplest aqueducts were constructed of lengths of inverted clay tiles and sometimes pipes which channeled water over a short distance and followed the contours of the land.
Roman forum

  •  A Forum was the main center of a Roman city. Usually located near the physical center of a Roman town, it served as a public area in which commercial, religious, economic, political, legal, and social activities occurred.
  • Its placement in the central part of the city dates back to the time of the Tarquin kings, and it was seen fit to build a sewer, the cloca maxima , to provide proper drainage of the marshy land between the Esquiline, Capitoline, and Palatine Hills down to the Tiber River
  • the land properly drained and dry, this area naturally became a central gathering location for the Etruscan inhabitants.

more cyber day

Plato
Plato was born around 428 B.C.  His father Ariston died when he was a child. His mother Perictione remarried the politician Pyrilamp. Ploto grew up during the Peloponnesian war. He was educated in philosophy, poetry and gymnastics by distinguished Athenian teachers including the philosopher Cratylus. He became a devoted follower of Socrates. Plato’s recollections of Socrates’ lived-out philosophy and style of relentless questioning became the basis for his early dialogues, which historians agree offer the most accurate available picture of the elder philosopher, who left no written works of his own. Ploto spent 12 years traveling around Italy, Sicily and Egypt. While he was traveling hyena was studying with other philosophers. He also followed followers of mystic mathematician Pythagoras. The 40 year old Plato returned to Athens and found his school in the clutch of the Greek hero Academus. Plato's final years were spent at the Academy and with his writing. The circumstances surrounding his death are clouded, though it is fairly certain that he died in Athens around 348 B.C. Many people think Plato died at a wedding some other people think he died peacefully in his sleep.

cyber day again

Greece made many great building

The temple of Athena Nike -  they built this around 300 B.C   The design of the temple was known as dipteral. Dipteral is two sets of columns surrounding the interior section. In the inner section there was a chamber that had a statue of Apollo. The Coombs were 64 Ft high

The Corinthian order - this temple did not reach full development until the middle of the 4th century B.C. it is the oldest known temple the columns of the temple are Corinthian. Corinthian  style is seldom used in the Greek world, but often seen on Roman temples. Its capital is very elaborate and decorated with acanthus leaves.

Erechtheum- - temple from the middle classical period of Greek art and architecture, built on the Acropolis of Athens between 421 and 405BC. This temple has sanctuaries in it. The sanctuaries are to  Athena Polias, Poseidon, and Erechtheus. The east side of the temple gave access to the temple of Athena. This was separated by a wall to the western side of the sanctuaries. The north side which is at a lower level gives access to the western side threw a fine doorway. The south side which is known as the Porch of the Caryatids. from the six sculptured draped female figures that support its entablature.it  is the temple's most striking feature; it forms a gallery or tribune. The west end of the building, with windows and engaged Ionic columns, is a modification of the original, built by the Romans when they restored the building. One of the east columns and one of the caryatids were removed to London by Lord Elgin, replicas being installed in their places.

cyber day assiment

Some of the most important inventions came from ancient Egypt.  The Egyptians invented some of the first medicine. Due to this they expanded there knowledge of the human body. We know this because they wrote all of there information down an papyrus. On them they say that the body has 46 vessels that go from the heart to every limb. That is only one of the many thing the Egyptians discovers about the human body.  The second most important invention is hieroglyphics. I think this because that is one of the first forms of writing. They firs started using hieroglyphics to write down the stories of great battles or even just a great accomplishment some one had. That is why people hired scribes because most of the Egyptian people did not know how to write.  The third most  important invention the Egyptians came up with were the clocks. The Egyptians made two types of clocks the first one is a sun clock and second is a water clock. This mas one of the most important break through  in ancient Egypt history because they could tell what time of day it is and when the hottest party of the day and when the day is going to end. The other treason they are important is to know when the crops and farm land need to watered and harvested. The sun clock were built as early as 3500 B.C. Their moving shadows formed a kind of sundial, enabling citizens to partition the day into two parts by indicating noon. They also showed the year's longest and shortest days when the shadow at noon was the shortest or longest of the year. Later, markers added around the base of the monument would indicate further time subdivisions. The water clock were cylindrical or bowl-shaped containers designed to slowly fill with water coming in at a constant rate. Markings on the inside surfaces measured the passage of "hours" as the water level reached them. These clocks were used to determine hours at night, but may have been used in daylight as well. The fourth most important thing was mummification. I think this because sits a way  to preserve someone's body. The other treason I think this is because it a break through in science because they learned how to use different types of chemicals to do one thing. The last thing was astronomy. The  temples are aligned along the axis of the rising midwinter sun, signifying to Egyptians that they should begin to prepare for planting in the spring. The Great Pyramid of Giza is filled with astronomical significance, based largely upon religious beliefs. the Egyptian astronomy began with recording the time of year for agricultural periods, and may well have served a navigational purpose, a common practice in the desert. These observations became imbued with religious significance and became incorporated into their architecture.

class

In class today we continued to talk about ancient Egypt.
Soldiers used to use wooden weapons, and bows &arrow. For the swords and the spears they used they only had a steal tip on them. They also used to ride chariots in war. Personally I would like to be on the chariot because you have the higher ground . we also got a little bit into the gods and goddess.
There were over 2000 gods and goddess. They controlled the lives of humans.
